Saturday morning teaching at the International Buddhist Academy, in Kathmandu, Nepal, by the Venerable Kunsang Choephel titled ‘Preliminary Practice: Guru Yoga’ on December 9th, 2017. The teaching is given in English.

The webcast:
Guru Yoga is an important preliminary meditation in which the practitioner visualizes the spiritual teacher as inseparable from the meditational deity, thus assisting the aspirant to cultivate a direct experience of the enlightened attributes of the body, speech and mind of the spiritual teacher. A correct relation to one's main spiritual teacher is considered vital in the Tibetan tradition, as this lays a successful foundation for progress on the spiritual path. An essential point to understand however is that the fully realised body, speech and mind of all the Buddhas is the ultimate spiritual teacher.

The Gompa Services registration fee for the webcast is £2.00. At the time you register you will also have the option to make a voluntary donation in support of the International Buddhist Academy.

In the initial ten day program, Drupon Khenpo Lodro Namgyal will teach on the preparatory practices for entering the Vajrayana path known as the ‘The Four Preliminary Foundations’. These are: the cultivation of an appreciation for the preciousness, potentials and opportunities of human existence; reflection on death and impermanence; reflection on karma (the doctrine of actions and their consequences); and reflection on the unsatisfactory nature of life in cyclic existence. These four considerations are regarded as key subjects of contemplation in the quest to overcome attachment to the attractions of worldly life. Successfully undertaken they lay a firm foundation for spiritual development.

Drupon Khenpo Lodro Namgyal is the Principal of Rigpe Dorje Monastic Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies at Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery, Lava, India, and was Drupon (retreat master) for the traditional 3-year Mahamudra retreat at Pullahari Monastery.
